Training > Khutšo KurhulaResources for HIV/Aids care in primary health facilitiesSince 2004 a wellness programme has been providing the best possible care to people living with HIV/Aids in the Greater Tzaneen district of Limpopo, one of the poorest provinces of South Africa.Known as Khutšo Kurhula ("peace" in both Xitsonga and Sepedi), the programme provides comprehensive HIV/Aids care at the primary health-care clinic level, carried out by nurses in cooperation with visiting doctors and people living with HIV/Aids, and in doing so preparing the clinics for antiretroviral rollout. A large number of valuable tools and resources developed by the Khutšo Kurhula team over the years are now available online for download. Storytelling in the waiting room
Storytelling in the Waiting Room is a unique HIV/Aids awareness project implemented as a part of the Khutšo Kurhula Wellness Programme. A storyteller playfully promotes openness by telling educational stories about HIV/AIDS in clinic waiting rooms. Carved wooden animals are the main characters, used to illustrate the story. This teaches people in rural areas about the complicated issue of HIV/Aids using a culturally sensitive technique.
Having reached an estimated 9 000 people, the stories have been widely received and judged informative by those who hear them. As one audience member discovered: "It is possible for a person to be skinny but not HIV-infected. The frog says he was born like that."
